Offline translation does not mean a fully offline assistant

An offline translator and an offline general assistant solve different problems. Translation changes language while preserving meaning. A general assistant explains, summarizes or reasons about a task. A downloaded model for one stage does not automatically provide the other, even when both features appear in the same app.

List the stages of your intended task

For a spoken translation, you may need microphone capture, speech recognition, text translation and speech playback. For a general spoken answer, replace translation with a model that can handle the question. Each stage has its own device, language and asset requirements.

This distinction explains a common partial success: the phone or Mac recognizes your words without internet but cannot produce the requested answer. Recognition succeeded; it did not prove that translation or general reasoning was available locally. Record which stage worked before reinstalling assets.

Keep Apple system guidance separate from app behavior

Apple’s Translate guidance explains downloading source and target languages for supported offline translation. That is guidance for the system translation workflow. It is not evidence that another application can answer arbitrary questions offline or supports the same language pair.

GPT Realtime Assistant’s published iPhone/iPad sessions require internet. Its existing local general-model workflow is described for Apple silicon Mac. New mobile translation options should not be assumed present in an installed store release. Check the actual version and controls.

Use two different readiness questions

For translation, ask: “Can this mode translate a new sentence in my exact language pair with connectivity off?” For general assistance, ask: “Can this mode answer a new simple question with its local reasoning model loaded?” Passing one test does not answer the other.

Use harmless inputs you have not already submitted. For example, translate a new sentence about a green suitcase, then ask a general model to explain a simple everyday concept. Saved examples and cached screens do not establish that fresh processing occurred offline.

Separate downloads from ongoing requirements

A speech model, a translation language and a general model may have different sizes and loading steps. A download may finish while a model still fails to initialize. On Mac, check available disk space and the model readiness state before testing; do not delete unknown support files to make room.

An offline inference path can also coexist with subscription or other service checks. Do not promise unlimited free use or indefinite disconnected access unless the product explicitly establishes it. Private Cloud Compute is an online processing choice, not another term for a local model.

Prepare an honest fallback

Before travel, test the exact device, installed version and languages in the conditions you expect. Keep important names, addresses and arrangements in written form. If the required translation pair or general model is unavailable locally, prepare a permitted online option or another appropriate method.

If a test fails, reconnect only to complete the identified setup step and repeat with fresh input afterward. Do not market partial transcription as a complete offline conversation. The useful outcome is knowing exactly which tasks work, on which device, and what still depends on a connection.

FAQ

Can a speech-to-text model answer my questions offline?

Not by itself. It recognizes speech; a separate general model or service must produce the answer.

Does offline translation support every language?

No. Availability depends on the actual component, language pair, device and version. Verify the pair you need.
