Japanese to French voice translation: a one-minute tutorial

A Japanese speaker talks; a French speaker reads and hears the translation. This one-minute lesson shows the setup and a short example in GPT Realtime Assistant, followed by reversing the language pair for your next conversation.

61-second recorded example in the Mac app with an English interface. Japanese input and French replies come from a previously recorded scripted demo, replayed for this tutorial. This is not a live speed test.

Watch with the sound on

Press Play, then raise the volume to hear the Japanese speech and the French replies. The first spoken line begins at about 14 seconds, after the setup. Optional Japanese and French subtitles are available in the video controls.

The example is a playful family introduction: meeting a boyfriend, offering him more food and asking about a wedding. The people and conversation are scripted demo material.

Set up Japanese → French

The video uses the English Mac interface, so the button names below match what you see.

  1. Open New Session and choose Translate a conversation.
  2. Set From to Japanese and To to French.
  3. Turn Speak translations on if you want an audible reply. This example uses one translation direction, with Translate both ways off.
  4. Choose Start translating. Speak in short turns and let each translation finish before the next person speaks.

What the two languages say

The first Japanese line introduces the guest as the much-talked-about boyfriend. The French reply is “Ah, c’est toi le fameux petit ami dont on parle, hein ?”

The later translations ask whether he is too thin, tell him to eat three bowls of rice, and ask when the wedding will be. The original text and its translation remain in the conversation, so you can check a phrase after hearing it.

Reverse the direction for your next conversation

In the new-session setup, use the arrow button between the languages to exchange From and To. The end of the video shows French → Japanese ready to start. It does not show a translated reply in that reverse direction.

Return to Sessions to read the saved conversation. This is useful when you want to check a name or phrase afterwards.

Use it for everyday conversation

Try a short conversation with family, a language-learning partner or someone you meet while travelling. Choose your actual language pair before starting and avoid speaking over each other.

A cloud translation session needs an internet connection and available app credits. Names, numbers, accents and background noise can affect the result; check anything that matters with the other person.

Can I hear the French translation?

Yes. Enable Speak translations before starting. This lesson includes the recorded French reply audio as well as the original Japanese speech.

Is this an iPhone screen recording?

No. This tutorial was captured in the Mac app. GPT Realtime Assistant also supports iPhone and iPad; the language-pair setup follows the same idea, but the screen layout differs.

Is the conversation being translated live in this video?

No. The newly captured interface replays a previously recorded Japanese-to-French demo. The video is labeled Recorded example and does not promise a particular live response time.
