Reduce background noise before transcribing speech

Noise reduction cannot recover speech that the microphone barely captured. Start with the room and device position, then compare a short sample before changing several software options at once.

Name the interference before choosing a fix

A steady fan, a neighboring conversation and the assistant hearing its own speaker are different problems. The fan can mask consonants, another voice can become unwanted text, and speaker feedback can create new turns when nobody is addressing the app. Write the observed symptom before deciding that a model or setting is the cause.

Ask a person to listen from the device's position. If they cannot distinguish the words comfortably, recognition begins with poor material. Moving closer to the intended speaker or away from a vent may help more than selecting a different response style.

Compare a sentence with important details

Use this invented test: “Do not release batch fourteen before Friday's review.” It includes negation, a number and a timing condition. Check the recognized text in the current position, then repeat from a quieter spot. Compare whether the condition survived, rather than simply counting how many words look plausible.

A useful observation is: “At the far end of the table, the word “not” disappeared; closer to the speaker, the full condition appeared.” One successful sentence does not prove the whole meeting will be reliable. It gives you a better setup to try in a longer, realistic exchange.

Improve the physical setup

People distributed across a large room may not be captured equally by one phone. Be explicit about that limit. Ask distant participants to confirm key contributions instead of treating every sentence in a neatly formatted transcript as equally trustworthy.

  1. Keep microphone openings unobstructed and the device out of a bag or pocket.
  2. Move away from fans, appliances and unrelated conversations where possible.
  3. Place the device near intended speakers, without putting it against a loudspeaker.
  4. Avoid overlapping turns when someone states an important detail.
  5. Repeat the sample at a normal volume rather than shouting.
  6. Change only one condition between trials and note the result.

Test playback as a separate variable

If the assistant's own answer reappears as new input, stop the exchange. Try a harmless question with lower output volume or headphones and check whether the feedback returns. Do not leave a loop running while it produces increasingly unrelated material and consumes usage.

GPT Realtime Assistant's voice features do not imply perfect echo control in every device route. When reporting a problem, include the device, route, mode and exact symptom. “Speaker output is recognized as a new question” helps isolate a problem more than “the answers are strange.”

Do not replace missing evidence with a rewrite

A model can generate fluent wording for a passage that noise obscured. Fluency is not recovery. If two people spoke at once or an amount was drowned out, ask for the detail again and record the clarification. Preserve that distinction when creating a summary later.

After testing, end the session and review what was captured. Agree on transcription before the real meeting, and retain ordinary note-taking as a fallback if the environment remains unsuitable. The objective is a reliable working record that reveals its gaps, not a complete-looking document with hidden guesses.
