Catch mistakes when AI reads text from an image

AI can produce a plausible line of text that is not what the image says. Review the extraction as a draft transcription, especially when a single digit, negative sign or column heading changes the meaning.

Inspect the image before the answer

Zoom in on the original. If you cannot reliably read a line, mark it as uncertain before asking the assistant. This keeps you from accepting a neat answer simply because it resolves the blur. Check whether glare, a fold or a crop hides an essential character.

Identify the layout: a single paragraph, two columns, a table or labels around a diagram. Reading order is part of the task. A correct set of words in the wrong order can attach a price to the wrong item or turn a heading into a sentence.

Use a small ambiguity test

Original extraction prompt: “Read this image without improving the wording. Preserve row labels and the order of items. Mark unclear characters with [unclear]. Do not complete familiar phrases from memory. Afterward, list regions you could not read and any row or column alignment you are uncertain about.”

For a synthetic test card, include “B-108,” “0.75,” “not included” and two item-price pairs. Compare the output character by character. A B/8 confusion, a dropped decimal point or a missing “not” can survive a fluent paraphrase. Use harmless invented data so a test does not expose real identifiers.

Separate character errors from structure errors

A character error changes a letter, digit or symbol. A structure error moves otherwise readable content to the wrong row, merges columns or omits a footnote. Review both: first compare exact high-risk strings, then verify which label each value belongs to. Counting correct words alone misses a wrongly paired table.

If a region fails, provide a tighter, clearer crop with its original heading. Keep the whole-image reference available so the assistant does not mistake a fragment for the complete document. Ask for the uncertain region again, not a complete rewrite that makes it harder to compare the corrected section.

Choose the right fallback

Apple Live Text offers text selection in supported images and languages, which can be useful as a separate extraction route. Its output still needs checking. GPT Realtime Assistant can use image context, but that is not a promise of exact OCR, handwriting support or reliable recovery of tiny print.

For an important quantity or identifier, type the verified source yourself or obtain a clearer original. If you cannot verify a character, keep the uncertainty in the final result rather than hiding it in a polished summary. Store only the reviewed text you need, with the source reference where retention is appropriate, and avoid turning an uncertain extraction into an asserted fact.

FAQ

Why does AI confidently fill a blurry word?

Generated text can favor a plausible phrase. Instruct it to mark uncertainty and inspect the image yourself; confidence of wording does not prove visual evidence.

Is a second OCR tool enough?

Agreement is a useful check but not independent proof when the image is unreadable. Compare with the original or ask for a clearer source.
